If you want a getaway that feels like stepping into a slower way of life, let me introduce you to Lakeside, Ohio. It offers a sweeter way of living. Nestled along the shores of Lake Erie, this historic Chautauqua community is a hidden gem that blends small-town charm with peaceful lake views. We drove up from Cincinnati with a little over 3.5 hour ride. We spent 24 hours exploring Lakeside and nearby Marblehead, and it was the perfect little escape.

Arriving at Lakeside
Driving in feels a bit like traveling back in time. Lakeside is a gated community, so you’ll stop at the entrance to purchase a day pass. You drive through this cute, branded gateway – you feel like you’re entering a little world of its own. Once inside, everything slows down. Streets are lined with Victorian cottages, blooming flowers, and friendly neighbors waving as you stroll or bike by.
Off-season tip: From late fall through early spring, Lakeside’s admission is free, so it’s a lovely time to visit without the crowds.
Parking inside the grounds can be tight, especially in summer. Once you snag a spot, it’s smart to stay put and explore on foot -or rent a golf cart for added ease and fun.
Sunrise Coffee & Donuts

Start your day with a little lakeside magic: coffee and fresh donuts at sunrise. We grabbed a “golden pumpkin” from Coffee and Cream on Second Street. Across the street, we got bag of the most incredible maple and cinnamon sugar donuts from The Patio Restaurant on Walnut Avenue. The combo of hot coffee, warm donuts, and a Lake Erie sunrise was pure bliss – totally worth setting the alarm for.
Strolling the Lakeside Path

It’s so beautiful to walk along the lakefront path, where the views of Lake Erie absolutely steal the show. The water sparkled in the morning sun, and the cool breeze was so refreshing. The kids loved spotting boats on the horizon while we took in the peaceful rhythm of the waves. Benches scattered along the way invite you to pause for a quiet moment or a quick family photo. It’s very “no plans. no schedule” and that’s what I loves about the town.
An Afternoon in Marblehead: Lighthouse + Ice Cream

Just outside the Lakeside gates, a short drive takes you to one of Ohio’s most iconic sights: the Marblehead Lighthouse. Standing on the rocky shoreline since the early 1820s, it’s the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes. Climb to the top for sweeping views of Lake Erie and the nearby islands. It’s a breathtaking experience. The view is as fun for kids as it is for adults. The lighthouse does close for the off season. However, even if you skip the climb, the surrounding park is perfect for a picnic. It’s also great for simply soaking in the lake breeze.
Because no lake day feels complete without dessert, we capped off our Marblehead visit with ice cream at Brown’s Dairy Dock, just minutes from the lighthouse. This classic roadside stand serves towering soft-serve cones and signature sundaes that taste like pure summer. We also had their sloppy joes and chili dogs – the most delish comfort food!
Shopping & Snacking Back in Lakeside
Wander through quaint shops and cozy cafés. We popped into a few boutiques for unique gifts and couldn’t resist the smell of freshly baked treats drifting from the local coffee shop. Whether you’re hunting for antiques, souvenirs, or just another cup of coffee, the options are delightfully curated.
If you visit, make sure to check the daily schedule – there’s often live music or community events happening in the town square.
Family Fun & Relaxation
One of Lakeside’s biggest draws is its family-friendly atmosphere. There’s a playground near the water, shuffleboard courts, mini golf, and plenty of open space for kids to run and play. If you’re visiting in summer, you can even take a dip at the small beach or rent a kayak for a paddle on the lake. We spent most of our evening wandering, people-watching, and soaking in the simple joy of a day with no big agenda. The weather was still pretty warm early September so the kids ran around the beach for hours. It was so relaxing.
Why We’ll Be Back
Lakeside is the kind of place that invites you to slow down, connect, and create memories. Whether you’re visiting for a day or staying for a week, it’s hard not to fall in love with its easy charm. For our family, it was a much-needed reminder that sometimes the best adventures are the simplest ones – fresh air, lake views, and time together. No agenda – just life.
If you’re planning a trip to Lake Erie, spend a full 24 hours in Lakeside and Marblehead. Start with sunrise donuts, stroll the lakefront, explore the Marblehead Lighthouse, and finish with a cone from Brown’s Dairy Dock. And if your visit happens to fall on October 11, pair your trip with the magical Lakeside-Marblehead Lighthouse Festival for extra charm.
