A Weekend in Dayton, Ohio: Family Fun, Aviation History & Bucket List Adventures
We just got back from a fun-filled weekend in Dayton, Ohio – and wow, what a blast! We headed up to attend the CenterPoint Energy Dayton Air Show and check off some major bucket list items while exploring this charming city. I’m already dreaming about our next visit.
Dayton offers the perfect blend of hands-on activities, rich aviation history that even the kids loved, and local charm that makes you want to slow down and stay a while.
If you’re planning a family-friendly road trip that’s just a couple of hours away from Cincinnati (hello, easy travel!), here’s a recap of what we did and some tips to help you plan your own adventure.
Getting There
We’re based in Cincinnati, so Dayton was just over an hour’s drive – a sweet spot for road trips with little ones. It’s long enough to feel like an adventure, but short enough to avoid major backseat chaos.
If you’re curious, here’s what I packed to keep my kids entertained on the drive.
Where We Stayed – Residence Inn by Marriott Dayton Vandalia
We stayed at the newly renovated Residence Inn by Marriott Dayton Vandalia, and it was perfect for our family of six. The suites are spacious with a full kitchen, so we could easily do some meals in the room, which made things relaxed and budget-friendly.
The indoor pool was a major hit with the kids after a hot day at the air show. Plus, the free breakfast meant quick and easy mornings before heading out.
The location was super convenient – all our stops were within a 15-minute drive, which kept the days stress-free.

Dayton Air Show – A Family Tradition in the Birthplace of Aviation
The CenterPoint Energy Dayton Air Show is held every June at Dayton International Airport and is a can’t-miss event for aviation fans of all ages.
In 2025, the show took place June 21–22, featuring the incredible U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and world-class aerobatic performers.
This event draws over 70,000 attendees annually, many of whom have cherished memories dating back to their own childhoods. When I shared on Instagram stories that we were going, my DMs blew up with so many nostalgic stories from followers who have been coming for years – it’s clearly a Dayton tradition!
We had a blast, and I know my kids will remember this weekend for years to come. The 2026 Air Show takes place June 13 & 14, and you can sign up to win tickets here!

Troll Trails at Aullwood Audubon – Magical Hiking with a Twist
Looking for a magical family adventure near Dayton? The Troll Trails at Aullwood Audubon Farm & Nature Center are an absolute must.
These giant trolls are handcrafted by world-renowned artist Thomas Dambo – and yes, they’re made entirely from recycled materials, so it’s an eco-conscious outing, too.
You’ll find three trolls hidden along the trails, each with its own quirky story. One troll, Bibbi, dreams of flying – a beautiful nod to Dayton’s aviation roots.
✨ It’s the perfect blend of art and nature for all ages.
Know before you go: Wear sturdy shoes, pack water, and plan about 90 minutes to explore.

National Museum of the U.S. Air Force – Free, Huge & Fascinating
This museum is seriously impressive – you could spend a full day exploring and still not see everything. It’s the world’s largest military aviation museum, and even if museums aren’t usually your thing, this one draws you in with its jaw-dropping displays.
The museum features four hangars filled with over 350 aircraft and aerospace vehicles, including iconic planes like Air Force One. You can even walk inside some of the aircraft!
The Women in Aviation and Tuskegee Airmen exhibits were especially inspiring, telling the stories of trailblazing women and men who shaped military aviation history – a meaningful highlight for the whole family.
Bonus: Admission and parking are completely free. They also offer stroller and wheelchair rentals, plus VR rides for an extra fee.

Boonshoft Museum of Discovery – Hands-On Science, Animals & More!
If your crew loves getting hands-on with science, animals, and interactive exhibits, the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery is a can’t-miss Dayton gem.
Here’s why we loved it:
- The Discovery Zoo is home to over 150 animals – from sloths to otters. Plus, it’s one of only four museums in the country accredited as a zoo, which means the animals get top-tier care.
- The planetarium offers immersive shows that make you feel like you’re soaring through space. Perfect for little astronomers (and grown-up stargazers!).
- So much pretend play! My kids would have made pretend pizzas all day long!
- Bonus: Boonshoft was recently voted Best Indoor Play Area for Kids in Dayton – totally deserved.
Hours are family-friendly and there’s so much to explore no matter your kid’s age.
Heads up: The exit leads right into the gift shop, so prep your kids ahead if you want to avoid toy temptations!
If you’re a member of another museum in the ASTC reciprocal program, you might get discounted or free admission.

Lunch at The Silos – Food Hall Vibes You’ll Love
One of our favorite stops was lunch at The Silos, a brand-new food hall in Dayton set inside renovated grain silos – the atmosphere alone is worth a visit!
We tried Nood Bar, which serves up delicious pan-Asian dishes like ramen, Korean rice bowls, and bao. Honestly, the noodles are still on my mind!
The Silos features four awesome vendors:
- Nood Bar
- Kung Fu BBQ
- The Burger Bistro
- Silos Bar
- Indigo
With indoor and outdoor seating, it’s a laid-back spot where everyone can find something they love – perfect for a midday refuel between adventures.
